4 millionth school run vehicle off the lines

Low mileage, harmful to the eco system, the scurge of cyclists and blocking your streets during rush hours, the 4 millionth land rover came off the production lines today

Land Rover hits four million mark

Land Rovers have been made at the plant since 1948
The four millionth Land Rover has rolled off the firm's production line in the West Midlands.
The iconic vehicles have been made at the firm's Solihull plant since 1948.

The latest Discovery 3 was collected by actress Joanna Lumley, who is a patron of the Born Free Foundation, a conservation charity.

The vehicle is being donated to the charity which will use it as a "rapid response rescue" vehicle for use in the UK and Europe.

'Major milestone'

It is estimated that 80% of all Land Rover Defenders ever produced are still in use, mainly on farms.

Land Rover managing director Phil Popham said: "We are delighted to hand this car over to Born Free.

"The production of the four millionth Land Rover is a major milestone and it is only fitting that it goes to such a worthy cause."

Born Free chief executive Will Travers said: "This important vehicle will enable us to carry out important frontline conservation and animal welfare missions at will.

"Without Land Rover's support we simply would not be able to reach some of the off-road remote destinations or tackle some of the rescues that are a vital part of our work."

Land Rovers are awesome, don't be hating.

My friend has a 1960s one at his house in Idaho. We drove that thing around on the back roads and it sure can take a beating.

Yes, the best place to use them, offroad!!!!

Unfortunately I think if we looked at ownership and usage, the scales have moved so far to the school run role that they've become what they are today

For non-proper landrovers, yeah. Defenders are still very much a farmer's thing, where as things like the discovery, freelander and range rover are used to takle the great hieghts of speed bumbs.

We'd rather have a Daihatsu Fourtrack or Izuzu Trooper, but they dont make those anymore, so when this generation dies British famers will probubly go back to the good old Land Rover.

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
