Singing, indeed not. He's got an extremely fetching voice. It's been said that he belts out a Peter Gabriel, minus the scratchiness. Additionally, his drumming is downright historic to boot. He's a superb and inventive arranger, and his production contributions are most effective.

He just can't write a full song to save his soul, not even a thoughtful lyric.

I agree for most of it apart from your last statement. I think he's penned some belters to be honest & he is very catchy and yeah I believe he is actually slightly more capable than Peter Gabriel. I find lyrics a bonus if they are meaningful because I listen to every kind of music. It's more the singing & the music as opposed to the lyrics & the music.

Being a musician myself I will say: Meaningful or progressive lyrics tend to be hard to write. It's like a lot of people in this thread obviously like power metal. It's so easy to right because it's just everything that is fake, fantasy and medievil n you just rhyme for most of it.

I am listening to my cooling fan.

An ambiguous lyric is one thing. A nonsense collection of pseudo-rhetorical drivel I wouldn't visit on a drunk chick is another. Yeah, it was the 80's and alot of groups got away with it. I'll also grant that Genesis and Collins had a right to sell out. They'd done some really incredible stuff, and it was time to tone down. The music scene had moved on and unfettered prog rock excursions were a surefire way to end up broke and ridiculed, but I refuse to give that latter work any regard as it lacks substance, even in the context of 80's music, regardless of how well produced and executed it was (and it was).

I don't give power metal much regard either, but I don't sound off about them cos "Supper's Ready", "In the Cage", "Los Endos", etc. didn't come from the power metal scene, much less a power metal group.

I've been writing music (instrumental, with one and only one exception) for over five years now, and I have trouble looking in the mirror for it.

I guess that's fair enough and down to individual taste but I agree with the ridicule bit though some of it was a bit regurgatated or just plain 'wtf'.

What instrument(s) do you play?

I've been playing just over five years too but I'm bollocks considering that. I learnt on a speed before accuracy, wtf is rhythm basis - which has dissapointed me ever since my music tastes have widely expanded. I play guitar, keyboard and bass. I've wrote lots of my own stuff with lyrics in the past but it doesn't appeal to me anymore. I'm currently trying to do something that might be a modern take on thrash or a cock rock sing along/ballad whilst trying to make it distinguishable (I know it's nothing to be proud of though).

I'm groovin to Kim Wilde - Kid's In America.
