Aye

In fact would be interesting to put a pool up to really see the numbers grow. As practically every member here probably can say the same thing.

My Grandad (Mother's Side) and Great-Grandad (Father's side) both fought in WW2. Former fought in the jungles of Burma (now Myanmar). The latter was an RAF pilot.

My Great-Great-Grandad fought in WW1, and was killed in 1915. I have his Death Plaque, as well as his son's medals at home, along with some of my Grandad's medals.

WOUDl love to hear them Lugubrum, whether they be from UK/US/German/Russian/Middle EAst/EAst/Common Wealth perspective.

Well i got a few my Self, my Grandad who passed away in 04 aged 96, Alex John (same as me) Stewart.

He spoke fluent german, spanish and Italien.
Was In germnay 2 weeks before war begun, was told jke by a German soldier about 2 germans going on holding in October 39, they want to go abroad, so 1 suggests a "forign" country but the other remarks but that is part of Germany.....

Managed to get into a Nazi Rally by chatting up some Germain ladiers to get tickets. Was faily shocked, siad their was lots of machine gun fire, planes flying overhead and shouting - dont think many non German actualy got to see one, "privelaged" in a highly twisted way i guess!

During the war he was sent to North Africa with the Artillery. HE was known after the war as the "human computer", so his job was to direct the artillery, computing the elevation ext. of the guns - required very good maths.
LIke all war veterans he had many sad stories, one where a shell hit the ammo limber, all the crew were out of the Gun Tractor except 1 poor chap.
Scorpians crawling into your blankets at night for warmth. Desperate for water, seeing a water like can, lugging contents, find contents to be oil.......
The fear of Stuka dive bombers and Setting up the artillery in a stagard formation to stop stukas dive bombsrs just firing strait alone 1 long line of artillery peices, taking them all out.

It was only in his last year that he told us anything, i am so glad i did manage to talk to him about his experiences becuase he did not speak about them to my mother or their brothers and sisters.

Wow intense. WW2 really did affect everyone it seems. Here is small story from my family: Both granddads fought in WW2. But as you may know, The Netherlands surrenderd in 5 days so one granddad was captured by the Germans and had to help build the Atlantikwall, I think in Normandy. The other one fled to Spain and later fought somewhere in the Pacific on a ship. Brothers of my granddads also fought and one died on a ship when they removed his wrong lung, it was a medical mistake and he died. Other familymembers remained in The Hague but where removed from their houses because part of the city were people where removed from their houses because the Atlantikwall went straight through the city. Whole neighboorhoods where removed. Then came the Hongerwinter (hungerwinter) in 1944/1945 and there was almost no food so my grandmother and her sister walked all the way maybe hundred of kilometers to the east of the country to get food from farmers. One familymember was let's say 'loudmouthed' (is that a word?) and she stood infront of a car with German soldiers and she asked for food from them and she got it from them. When they came back home, Bezuidenhout (neighboorhood in The Hague) was bombed by the British airforce. They said it was a navigation mistake, they actually wanted to bomb a V2 Rocket launch place from the Germans which was located in Haagse Bos. Hundreds of civilian casualties and almost the house of my family got hit. This is most of the information I know from my family in WW2, the problem is, my family almost never wants to talk about WW2. One remarkable thing is that my granddads and family never felt hatred towards German people after the war. Actually they liked to go to Germany on vacation and I remember my granddad liked German cars.
