Here is my PR shortcut forcing widescreen on my 1440x900 monitor

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900 +fov 1.08

your shortcut will look like :

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 1

when the game is first installed. So depending on what resolution monitor you are using, alter the additional coding appropriately

Go to My Documents find the BF2 folder look inside it you will se a profiles folder open it and delete all the files , make sure you remember your login and password because it will be deleted and will need to be retrieved. After all that is done you will need to reset all of your settings.

You can make it work on widescreen... what videocard are you runnin man? maybe it can't support the highest resolution?

Also, if the card has a fan on it (like most modern videocards do), leave your case open and start your computer up, make sure the fan spins up.

Same thing happened to me a while back, and this fixed it.
