Wow. There's a major innaccuracy about the effects and potency of Khat. Like cocaine? Yeah right. More like caffeine. Probably the most accurate comparison would be to ephedra. I wouldn't say that the militias were "fuelled by the drug trade" anymore than the Chinese empire was fuelled by the same in the form of tea.

And to call it a narcotic just proves that they know absolutely nothing about what they're talking about.

-they mention a 50cal on a humvee and show someone with an m60?

If you chew coca leaves it gives the same effect as I understand it. If Khat were processed like coke you could probably get an alkaloid.
It's also a sign of the times , blame everything on drugs.....the new one is blame everything on Al Queda.
It will be interesting if HRC wins and has to send troops back into Somalia.

Yes, you could do an alkaloid extraction of khat. I would say chewing khat, caffeine, and ephedra are all probably more "hardcore" than chewing coca leaves. In the very small doses one receives from chewing coca leaves, the stimulation is very "clean", in that it provides wakefullness and alertness without the jitteriness or anxiety that things like caffeine would produce. Unfortunately this means that people can extract the cocaine alkaloid and get a much stronger stimulation than one could ever get from caffeine (because the jitteriness and CNS effects would be much too strong).
