Overclocking...

I have an
AMD 64 3500+
Dual channel 1 GB of RAM
A 120GB 2MB cach harddrive
and a Radeon x800 256 mb video card

al basrah runs crummy for me and my settings are

Terrain - Medium
Effects - medium
geometry - medium
texture - high
lighting - medium
dynamic shadows - medium
dynamic lighting - medium
Anti-alising - 2x
texture filtering - high

now do you think i could be running my settings higher? i know my 2mb cache harddrive slows me down in some areas (but im not sure which)
and my video card came with a overclocking cd, but ive never done it before, would overclocking help al basrah run better? thats the only map that runs crummy for me, its only real apparent when im flying.

clarifying- 1gb total or 2x1gb for the ram? the x800 is what i had till i upgraded, atleast the GTO version. was able to run almost everything med-high until basrah.. i couldn't fly in that map due to hiccups. now i have 2gb (2x1024mb) of ram, but i'm pretty sure my new videocard is helping.

overclocking your videocard is risky but it can pay out. your processor should be fine.... maybe try the videocard overclock... i'm not sure what the results will be like though.

Skip the overclocking, get another GB of RAM. Either that, or turn your settings down.

What exactly is overclocking, and how does one do it?

Hold off and get some RAM, overclocking is this thing people do to get pseudo performance gains, really, all you will see is a few extra points in 3dMark. Thats it. Any true overclocker will tell you straight, it doesn't give you any real world performance gains.

Overclocking is basically forcing a peice of hardware to run at a higher clock rate than was intended.

It can garner a little bit of extra performance, and is pretty low risk granted you have proper cooling and airflow in your case.

It can be done fairly easily. OC'ing your CPU simply involves getting into your BIOS and raising the CPU's FSB clock speed.

CPU OC'ing can be done by downloading free software, or manually adding a specofoc registery. It too simply involves raising the clock speed of the GPU.

Riki, BF2 pretty much requires 1.5GB RAM minimum if you want to run textures on high.
