The 5.56 is more quickly than a 7.62 and it can gain a most fire rate but is also more light(so more impressed by meteo situation like wind, rain, etc.)and less effective against the most popular modern military targets(infantry included)....less,not uneffective.
5.56 is a very good balanced caliber because combine an optimum impact power with a very quickly fire rate but that involve a quickly management of the shooting gas that often will cause automatic reload malfuction...meanwhile the 7.62 in more powerfull, more heavy and more effective but suffer a minor fire rate...that is because most soldiers prefer a weapon more heavy to bring but more affidable, more slow but more effective...but is only an idea...each fire encounter is different and dipend from a lot of things. P.s. Sorry 4 my english,i hope you understand...anyway i wrote a lot of newspaper articles on this topic and i have some awereness on it,i can explaine better in Italian if you are truly interested an if you can translate. |

Wow, I was surprised that the M240 got a thumbs up. I know it's a good gun, but from the way my army buddy made it sound, the guys who were issued them despised the gun for it's weight.

I think everybody who has to carry an MG despised it for it's weight.
But I would ask the same question of the pool of people who answered this poll. |

They might hate carrying it, but only until they need to use it.
It seems people who are actually killing prefer larger calibers. You shouldn't have to shoot someone more than once to take the fight out of them. Would you rather have more, less effective ammo or fewer, more effective rounds. I'll take the latter. |

That is the reasoning in the Marine Corps. You want more accurate, powerful rounds. The Army has a creed. It's the Soldiers Creed (not sure of the name) and it basicly says that he will train himself to be a weapon. Well the Marines have a creed also. Theirs is that they are a weapon WITH their rifle. In fact, one of the lines of it states "Without my rifle, I am nothing." In otherwords they need their rifle to kill. Another part of it is "My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit." In otherwords, we don't care about "Rate of Fire". Marines are taught not to worry about rate of fire, but about effectiveness of fire. Sure, when the shit hits the fan, its nice to be able to put out rounds and surpress the enemy, but I would rather nail him in the head and save the next 29/19 rounds (depending on the Rifle) for the next sorry SOB that fires at me. That is why you will find different Ideas from the different services. Simply because they are raised on different ideals (I say raised because both the US Army and the Marines raise their men, just one makes them better men, the other takes away the title "man" and replaces it with "Marine").
PS, another complaint I've heard of the M16/M4 series is that they cannot be used in hand to hand combat they way a rifle should be able to. You land a good butt stroke on an opponent with a 16/4 you will have a big fiberglass club. Smack him with a 14 and you have one dead enemy at your feet and more potential ones downrange. This is so because of the Buffer Spring in the buttstock. The rifle can't work without it, and because it's fiberglass and stuff the thing breaks too easily. Gimme a good, heavy wood stock over that one anyday. |
