Orson Scott Card's "Empire"
http://www.amazon.com/Empire-Orson-S.../dp/0765316110
And here is an interview with Scott regarding the book. http://richmedia.pajamasmedia.com/au...128-empire.mp3 The plot is that in 2008, the newly elected president and vice president are assasinated (by an unknown but presumably jihadist orginization). A Left-wing extremist (by that I mean socialist/communist) group creates thier own quasi government claiming to be the rightful sucessors to the dead executives, and various state legislators and state governments pledge thier alliegence to it. Things get worse, and the country ends up in a state of hyper-polarized civil war. Dunno how plausible that is, I think its mainly just a commentary on how rediculously divided we are right now. Comments on the book and/or our current political divisiness relative to civil war welcome (please don't get into political arguments. if there are any arguments, it should be as to the likelyhood that there could or could not be a civil war) |

hmm, he's writing contemporary thrillers now is he?
I wonder how this will effect his books that are in many classrooms across the US, essentially his writing ones like Characters and Viewpoints. will they get banned by the loony book burning parent groups? |

I don't think we are that divided. I think much of the division is media spin because it sells. A civil war in America is not very likey because we have so many different points of view it would be hard to organize anything. We also have millions of rednecks armed to the teeth that would resist a communist type government for a very long time.
I look foward to reading the book because I have liked every other book he has written. The bean and ender are my heroes. |

Well militarily a civil war wouldn't happen because the full military would get involved and a divided national guard wouldn't be able to stand up to them unless of course I suppose the Military splits and joins the civil war too and then we would be f#*&^%$.

Personally, I believe something along the lines of what AD&A beleives, that the divisivness is a media thing.
Honestly, I think its about 5% Socialist/America Sucks Crowd, 25%Democrats, 20%Republicans 10% Crazy Evangelicals and 40% people who think that they don't have a party that represents them well, and tends to vote for the lesser of two evils every time. I don't think a civil war is possible, but I think a 3rd party is. If only a Libertarian guy with lots of money got his act together, we could have a Libertarian party. |
