The picture is from a space simulator from NASA, which was running a live simulation of the curiosity going to mars accordingly to timetable and data from NASA.

The added faces are from a game where you build a rocket to go to space, when they scream like they do in the picture something usually has gone terribly wrong.

It's preliminary data on the amounts of solar radiation measured by the rover on the surface of Mars. The spike on the chart is residue from a solar flare that occured in march this year.

Basically, they do this to fully understand what kind of levels of radiation exposure are involved in a trip to Mars. Since radiation is the biggest threat to astronauts, they need to know how much of it you're exposed to, in order to be able to build adequate shielding to protect people from the whole death thing when it's time for a manned mission to Mars.

But yeah, this is brilliant. Quite chuffed to live at a time when we can see quite clearly what other planets look like.

what is even more amazing is the fact the we are getting the pictures and information "in real time". Usually, a few years ago, we woud have to wait for the news on tv or a press conference . Now, with twitter, pictures arrive just hours after they are send from the rover.

Too bad that the rover has even more shittier camera than any normal phone. For a multi-million dollar nuclear powered equipment they decided to add a two megapixel webcam, probably used from livejasmin, good job guys.

The fact that it's on fucking mars has nothing to do with it. Ever tried uploading a 15gb image? Would take me a week. If I was on mars I imagine it would take a lot longer.

Besides, the new full colour images are actually real high quality.
