Mouse and keyboard.
I can't stand flying helicopters with a joystick, especially the throttle control. Jets on the other hand I don't mind, except for strafing. |

I have a joystick and I fly with mouse + keyboard
My joystick power is set around 10-15% for helicopter and I don't touch anything else And when you want to land, you just don't have to hold the S Key |

For helicopters, mouse and keyboard all the way.
For jets, joystick when flying and mouse for strafing. |

I got a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro two years ago (very nice joystick, and cheap; like $30-40) and I used it to fly jets only, but people kept persuading me to use the joystick for helicopters too.
I was resistant at first, since I was used to flying the helos with a mouse and keyboard, but I practiced with the joystick for a while. It took a long time, but I eventually realized that the joystick just worked better with me for the helicopters. More control, smoother turns and evasive maneuvers (flips, barrel rolls) and easier navigation of a landing zone before setting down. It's all about personal preference, and using the mouse and keyboard for choppers can be just as effective, but if you have a good joystick but don't use it for choppers, I highly recommend trying it out; it gives you far more freedom of movement than you might think. |
