Well Gaffer, yes you can, just by turning Mumble's main volume up. But then again, you'd go deaf if someone is whispering 20m away, haha!

TIPS FOR MUMBLE USERS

Use these tips to tailor your mumble experience to your taste.

Note - Everyone has different output and input hardware/software, making tailoring your mumble a good idea.

IMPORTANT HOTKEYS

To set, go to Configure -> Settings -> Shortcuts -> Add, double click on the new selection and set what you want.

Mute - Between rounds Mumble can get loud, depending on who you're playing with. SET A MUTE BUTTON if this annoys you.

Volume - You can set hotkeys to increase and decrease mumble volume when ingame, this allows you to change your focus or compensate for loud or quiet players. IRL when I don't want to have the radio blasting in to your ear when I'm on St John Ambulance duty, I turn the radio down to the level I can hear it, but its not my focus unless I hear my callsign.

MUMBLE VOLUME AND YOU (This applies to BF2 VOIP as well!!!)

Go to bf2 options-audio, effects volume

Turn your effects volume DOWN, mine is at 20%.

Then, turn your computer's Master volume, or speaker volume UP!

This will make ALL voip and mumble comms louder in relation to your game.

Other things to consider

You can set multiple buttons for the same function, I have duplicate function buttons on my joystick for when I fly.

Breaking up -

go to configure, settings, audio input and turn that quality level down, something is limiting your transer rate.

can't think of anything else

also you can do the above by just typing it
in 90% of combat in PR, you will not type unless its less than 3 words, otherwise you'll get ganked.

so lets put that in to perspective, 90% of the time in combat, blues cannot work together effectively. The emote system can only go so far, and not at all if you haven't learned what the chinese/arabic/etc emotes are.

with mumble on the other hand, especially with 2 channels, you can work with your blues dynamically.

I want a blue to throw a grenade in to a window while I cover, can't type that since I need to cover the blue.
I want a blue to know there is an LMG around the corner, cannot type that as LMG might just walk around the corner etc.

Really the difference is.... the realism of it. Together is more real and more fun!!
Also incorrect imo.

Mumble IS NOT about realistic sound, its about realistic communication and tactics.

IRL, each soldier has a radio, he can talk to other units etc with the appropriate frequencies etc.

ingame, you can only talk to commander and your squad with VOIP, with Mumble you can talk to anyone, huzzah, thats great.

However, now the enemy can hear you

what happens?

No1 speaks in combat for fear of tipping off the enemy.
people teabag like its going to go out of style
realism is degraded

the last point there, here is the explanation

1)no whisper function, whispering in to a mic sounds like a loud wind or a fart without the phhhphphphph noise.

2)no sound occlusion, solid objects do not affect sound

3)languages, it is rather odd that every US soldier understands arabic, and every MEC soldier understands english, even more so that they can do eachothers accents perfectly....

4) languages Part 2, non-english speaking squads suddenly get an advantage in as if they could speak some strange unbreakable code, in as if the CIA had sent a hitsquad to teh battle....

CONCLUSION

2 channels is more realistic, you can still find the enemy using footsteps, weapon sounds, emotes and other evidence however you can still realistically communicate with your team to create realistic tactics

Realistic Tactics are the point of the game, so in conlcusion the 2 channel setup is far superior, and isn't so bad for players to conform to since we've all had to do it for TS and vent for years, we're used to having to change channels in a 3rd party VOIP application.

edit, seems like watching west wing makes me go off on little speeches, I apologise :P

I frankly like the spam you get in single channel servers (withing limits though, most people are just funny but there are some trying specifically to annoy). I get some good laughs out of the crap I hear in mumble between games. I could have lost the round miserably but the people in mumble still make me smile, and I find that really important any game.
Besides, you can bind a key to deafen yourself.

But either way, with one or two channels, it's indisputably a very useful tool for maintaining a team's cohesion even without a commander. You're more likely to get the support from another squad and info on the enemy team now that you can directly communicate with other SLs.

This signature is here due to lack of imagination.

both separate channels or a single channel are ok. However RT is the only one with mandatory mumble. Plenty of times people aren't using mumble on other servers. Also i like the asset rule. I don't like waiting 10 mins for a helo to spawn when some one just steals it from me after waiting one minute. Which has happened to me countless times in the past on TG. But i dont' know maybe some guys like the thrill of stealing one lol. Or 3 apcs doing their own thing instead of teamwork. Just my opnion.

This is what one of the devs (dbzao) says about mumble.

5. Player doesn't want to use Mumble since the enemy can hear him. It happens since we configured the mumble channels to have only one channel for both teams. It's a little annoying consequence even though realistic to some degree. Setting two separated channels is possible, but then you have the annoyance of moving to the right channel and everything. We are checking if we can setup a script that does that automatically. Also it's the same issue with TS, as people can just join the wrong channel the same way and hear the enemy plans.

Mumble is way too complicated to set up and connect, requires several key bindings, is a program that needs to be started separately, is yet another program that needs to be run as an administrator and still fails to replace ingame voip.

Game play with mumble is much better. When I have players using it, I often see 2 or 3 squads working togheter and they normally win.

I like 1 channel only because when Im playing as insurgency and I find a US squad, I can send them away just by yealling ALLAHAU AKBAR !

I hope the DEV team work more on it

Ah, what are the new freatures in the vanilla mumble ?

[R-DEV]OkitaMakoto:"Cheers, you're the man, Okita"
[R-DEV]Rhino:"I in fact got kicked from a server for tking."
Hitperson:"well done, treasure it forever."
[R-DEV]Rudd:"if a pidgeon lands on the phone line I lose internet for 3 days"
[R-DEV]Chuc:"Pro man, pro."
(yes, it was about me)
[R-MOD]BloodBane611:"Romagnolo, you definitely deserve a LOL award for that."

Its not here to replace ingame voip OMG. Its here so you can talk to the other squads and it adds another layer of comms. You still need to use ingame voip or you will fail HARD!

BTW RT is discussing yet again if we shall have one or two channel system, atm it looks like the two channel system is ahead this time, but we are still discussing.
