I tried FH2. Would be great because it would be different than PR however I hated the game-play. That's just me however. However what also made me disfavor the mod was the fact they told me to piss off when I suggested adding Canada as a playable country. I tried making a point that nobody ever bothered to add Canada in any military game which is crazy for WW1 and WW2 games as Canada was a major part of both of them.

We served the British but were seperate at the same time. We had our own uniforms, etc. I am sure FH1 was popular in it's day of BF 1942 but with Project Reality I don't see why people would be bothering keeping those mods as active. I am sure they got there activity and popularity but I can't see any of them coming close to PR.

Any other mods would have to be Single Player mods.
I think they told you to piss off because adding a new faction is a lot of work Besides the American involvement in WW2 is more important than the Canadian. I find that DEVs of any game get pissed when you try to order them to do stuff (WHERE IS MY FAST ROPES PR DEVS???). Can you link me to your post?

I've been playing online games for about 10 years now, so I've tried my share of mods.

IMHO PR is and remains popular because the devs understand that gameplay is what makes a game/mod enjoyable more than anything else. I've tried and discarded other BF2 mods that are nothing more than a couple of new vehicules/skins. There is a healthy amount of new content in PR but what makes people play it every day is its addictive and original gameplay.

FH/FH2 has introduced interesting elements but in the end the gameplay is too close to vanilla BF2 (and bf1942) to stand out on its own. Also the releases are too far apart so people tend to loose interest.

Take Insurgency, a Source mod. The setting and skins are nice and fun but in the end the gameplay is very close to zillions of FPS out there. PR's insurgency maps have the same kind of look but the cache gameplay means that you get a very different experience.

The gameplay argument applies to CS. It was and remain an original idea. Until very recently, there were more CS players than CS:Source players, despite the fact that the game is quite old now. People keep on playing CS because it is fun, even if you don't get the state of art DX10 effects. And I'm pretty sure people will keep on playing CSS for a while too.

Noone really seems to be playing any mod on BF2 aside from PR. I enjoy forgotten hope, as i like WW2 games, but i so often see the servers completely empty.

EoD deserves so much more recognition, but I guess BFV beats it or somethig

AIX is fun when you need a break other than vbf2. A lot of my friends play it

Try some insurgent strike. Reminds me a lot of PRMM .2
