Default Old user thinking of coming back

Hey gang.

I used to play PR pretty close to the beginning I think. It's been several years so its hard to remember but I think I used to play around 0.4 and 0.5. I believe 0.6 turned me off of the game.

I am thinking since its been awhile about giving it another shot. I didn't stop playing because I got bored/moved onto something else. The updates somehow caused more servers to have less fun game play and tactics so I just stopped enjoying the game.

Has this gotten better lately? Let me give a little context of why I loved PR 0.4 so much at the time:

1. BF2 had too many people "going alone" and hopping into vehicles etc. There was barely any ground tactics. One thing I LOVED about PR was the emphasis on squad tactics. I loved walking around with my squad, supporting each other and attacking a flag another squad was holding and failing, our squad trying again until we succeeded etc.

2. As above. way less vehicle use. Way more ground tactics and team play.

3. People were very welcoming about squad teammplay. It was almost required and everyone worked together.

4. Even though I was new, I wasn't trashed. Using VOIP I would ask questions and we would succeed as a team.

5. VOIP was encouraged and a lot of people were using it. XBOX Live is like this as well. Most PC games have VOIP with 3rd party apps but its not a "join and go" experience so 90% of people aren't on it. Squad play was awesome with VOIP.

6. Maps. Maps were awesome. There was one level that had sky scrapers and one team had to fly over in helis to capture the flag and the sky scrapers were right along the edge of the water and had a huge concrete wall. Enemies would come in, land in the heli or by boat and use the stairs up the concrete wall. This map was an awesome fockying back and forth against the other team game. So much fun.

7. Games like BF2 or Quake don't make dying fun. You die so quickly and so often I would just get bored. In PR when I died, I fealt like I was still fighting for a goal, struggling to capture or defend something so when I died I would try another angle or rejoin my squad etc. There was much more feeling of a purpose.

Later mods I really fealt many of these aspects went away. Team play was gone. Maps weren't as encouraging to team play. VOIP was harder to find in squads. Squads with leaders who wanted to organize the squad and work together were hard to find etc.

Just overall it fealt it lost all the things that made it unique and tactical. I'm tired of the jump in a heli and gun people down. in 0.4 the vehicles were used sparingly, only in 1-2 maps if I recall and for very specific purposes and there weren't very many vehicles.

Have things changed? Is PR team oriented and tactical again? Or is it vehicle mania?

I'm downloading things as we speak so thought I would post and get some idea where we are at these days

Thanks so much for listening!

There is a strong emphasis on squad based infantry, but the tactics are limited by design. Every successful infantry tactic in PR now has to be based around fire superiority.

While most people will play as infantry, you will probably find yourself deeply frustrated by armour, which retains much of its real life potency (unlike infantry). Additionally, anti-armour kits are very, very scarce.

There are infantry and light vehicle only loadouts, but for the most part the team that is able to produce the most forward outposts, and hold them will gain an advantage in light vehicles, which will win them the match (light vehicles mount .50 weapons that are almost perfectly accurate and one shot kills).

There are also some problems with light vehicles running people over (infantry weapons can't reliably engage the drivers of vehicles who lost none of the potency of their tires to deviation).

These are the bad things. On a good server, squadplay is good, the people take it very seriously, and admins enforce realism rules. It will probably be well worth your while downloading it, but it will take some adjusting to.

hey man. i played pr in its earlier stages too, and all i can say is that it has moved even further from origional battlefield 2.
first thing you might notice is that everything is centered around teamwork. you can't spawn on your squadleader, but only at rallypoints and firebases.

secondly, a lot of special kits will have to be requested and are limited, so you can't just join and grab a sniper rifle or anti tank.

thirdly , the weapons aren't as accurate anymore, replicating the human flaws.
pr is nowadays more "realistic" in the way that there isn't action around every corner. the gameplay is prolonged so successful firefights are the reward of careful planning and teamwork.

download the PR guide and shimmy through it to see some of the major changes. from a distance, pr takes a lot more time to play now than when it did in the earlier builds, but it can be really engaging and rewarding.

I'm going to be really honest with ya..

1. Yes, squad play is a must if you want anything done and is enforced on some aspects. You can still go off, do your own thing but you won't succeed and your team will most likely lose, there's a lot of times in a game where one guy can make a difference, since SL, APC, flag spawns were removed, using any means to stay alive is mandatory.

2. There's a lot more vehicle use. There are infantry maps with jeeps only and stuff, but in 0.8 with limited AT and low staminas APC rampages and people driving over the enemies are really common, hopefully 0.85 has something to fix this. You can avoid this on urban maps by going into alleys or roofs of course, but huge open maps you are useless without vehicle support.

3. Still there

4. The learning curve has gone very steep and with loads of new players there's a lot of people going RTFM (read the fluffy manual) since a lot of the same questions are asked again and again, but there are of course people than will help.
I do suggest studying the manual of course.

5. VoIP is necessary, of course you could have a silent squad, but those perform rather rubbish.

6.

That was Muttrah v1, now we have Muttrah v2 which is epic win (go check the front page, a few articles back in 0.8 announcement)

There is no more vBF2 maps though.

7. No unfortunately dying is very annoying and frustrating, as I said one guy can make a change now, of course the spawn time is still 30 seconds but penalties occur if you do stuff like suiciding or dying in a row.
The point is not to die now.
Hover there is stuff that reduces the time too.

Yup I'm downloading both as we speak. That's why I posted cuz its gonna be a few hours to get the update, and both PR downloads hehe.

I think in PR 0.4 we had kits and squad spawn points or whatever you call them so that isn't foreign to me however I was always confused where to go to get kits etc before but other than that the squad play was awesome.

I don't think we even had tanks back then and I preferred it that way. I really liked the maps how like the one I mentioned the heli really was only used as a transport vehicle. It had weapons but they were hard to use so they were used as a defence mechanism to get to the target point and unload.

It just made it so intense. The vehicles weren't hated like in BF2 because they weren't mowing down people. There were very few of them as well.

Sorry to hear the comments above about tanks being so accurate and a caveat like that. That is what made BF2 crummy and PR2 so refreshing.

I'm looking forward to jumping in, in a few hours. I might to hunt for the manual and read while I wait hehe.

all assault type vehicles in pr are lethal as hell, but when you take em down, they don't respawn for 10 minutes or more ;D

for 6, this is what you want to look at

http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f273...trah-city.html

you might want to wait till the new v0.85 patch comes out thou it may be a little more time, might be worth the wait thou since there will be many improvements to gameplay and bug fixes that might otherwise turn you off, things like the current deviation etc.

That's why I'm cooling it just now. Such work goes into the Mod I just dont want to get annoyed with it........I know Armoured vehicles are deadly but when you take one down its great and the relief to your team………it’s a good balance……. very rewarding…….the only gripe is you cant run for cover when crossing the road …….when you find yourself run over when it would never have been the case IRL………pity you cant put a wee adrenalin ticker so when there is an APC near you, you get that wee bit more time on the run………..
