Gameplay Videos with 2 Cameras Side by Side

This is a cool little app I wrote in May 2010 using YouTube's Javascript API. I visited it again recently and I think more people should be inspired to use it as it's pretty cool in my opinion. :D

Checkout the example bellow, but before clicking MAXIMIZE YOUR BROWSER WINDOW for maximum viewer pleasure. ;)

How does it work?

At the top right you have the percentage that was buffered for each video. It's good to have them be close together or you will get pauses during playback. You can also just let them both buffer completely to 100% so you won't have any breaks.

The videos begin paused, so you have to press Play to begin watching. If for some reason they get a little unsynched, you can press Sync to get them at the same time frame.

You can choose between different video qualities (360p, 480p and 720p), it depends on your hardware and download speed.

The audio by default is on the Left video, but you can click the Switch Audio link to switch between them. You can notice in the example above that on my view (Left) I'm talking to other Squad Leaders, but you don't hear that on Spriggan's view (Right).

After watching each part you can switch to the other Parts of the round using the links to the right.

How did we do it?

Spriggan and I recorded the full round that night. We both opened the map to show the clock and 3, 2, 1, started recording. That helped us later on during editing to know we were fully synchronized.

We both opened the first clip in VirtualDub (read more about my editing workflow here), found the exact frame the clock went from one second to the other and cut everything before that. Now we knew we were in sync and could just append the rest of the clips without problems as we recorded the full round. I think we had to interrupt recording one or two times but we just used the in-game clock trick to get in sync again.

We both watched the videos together and selected the scenes that were more interesting. We would say "start at frame 23554 and end at frame 43455". Using the exact frame numbers we made sure we had the exact same parts in sync.

With all the clips edited it was just a matter of each exporting their own videos. We had to export in 3 parts because of the 10 minutes limit on YouTube at the time. Then each uploaded their videos to YouTube and used my cool little app to put them side by side.

I think it's a pretty easy way to do that kind of view without having to upload and download the raw video from the second camera and editing them side by side in a complicated editing software, going back and forth and so on. By itself, each video is one view of the action and it's just fine to watch standalone. But if you put them together you can switch the audio from one side to the other and see each other's view of the action at the same time. Pretty cool. :)

How can you use it?

The app is open for anyone to use it, you just need to put a comma-separated list of the YouTube video IDs in the v parameter. It expects at least two IDs, but if you put 4, 6, 8, etc, it adds the Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 links at the top automatically.

Passing the 15,000 revisions mark

Today we passed the 15,000 revisions mark and Jaymz was the one to do it with this change that is probably the biggest in the mod's history:

But it's a mark, and just around 1 year ago I posted about passing the 10,000 mark, which shows the amount of work being done for this release.

IDF Infantry on Beirut. Multiple squads with Mumble, engaging APC, CQB against russian infantry, Merkava support, suppressive fire.

US Infantry on Fallujah West. Ambushing insurgents, teamwork with multiple squads with Mumble, heavy CQB engagements, Tank and APC cover, bomb trucks, arresting insurgent collaborators, retreating, flanking, suppresive fire, assaulting compounds, bounding overwatch.

But this round is special because JouninSpriggan and I recorded and edited the exact same parts so you can view them from 2 points of view. Check this thread for more information.

IDF Infantry on Gaza Beach. Destroying enemy weapon cache, heavy engagements with Merkavas supporting infantry, getting hit by bombcars.

US Infantry on Silent Eagle. Intense close quarter engagements between infantry squads.

Canadian Airmobile Infantry on Operation Archer. Insertion and extraction by Chinooks, heavy fighting with Taliban soldiers, engaging enemy bomb truck, taking down weapon caches.

How I Record, Edit and Export PR Gameplay Videos

I wanted to share this and hopefully get more people involved in recording PR gameplay and show the world what PR is all about. ;)

Of course, it's not the only way to do it, but it's enough for me, after trying all sorts of setups. My main goal was not to spend much time editing and recording, so I decided to just show straight PR gameplay. I show what I really see, no fancy battlerecorder 3rd person views and whatnot. It's cool to see that kind of thing, but for me it's all about the time you want to spend. Between showing straight gameplay and not showing anything (because it's too much time consuming), I choose the straight 1st person gameplay.

If you are using Windows Movie Maker (God have mercy on your soul) you are dealing with crashes and crappy export options for no good reason. Here I show you a stable, simple, straightforward way to do it, so hopefully you can learn from it and be inspired to try it yourself.

US Army airmobile infantry on Kashan Desert. Using Blackhawks for transport, Mumble for communication with multiple squads, assaulting enemy positions with hot LZs, calling CAS, destroying enemy helicopters with AA.

Chinese infantry on Qwai River. Funny stuff in the beginning, Mumble for communication with multiple squads, heavy infantry engagements, flanking maneuvers, ambushing enemy vehicles, getting stopped by sniper, assaulting the enemy's last control point.

British infantry on Al Basrah. Ambushing Big Red, calling Artillery on insurgent positions, CQB in the suburbs, ambushes, heavy assault with multiple squads on last enemy cache using Mumble for communication.

Chinese VN3 and mobile AT on Operation Barracuda. Working with multiple squads on Mumble, engaging enemy infantry with VN3s, destroying enemy helicopters, engaging enemy APCs.

British mechanized infantry on Fools Road. Securing enemy prisoner, communication with APCs and other squads with Mumble, infantry engagements in the forest, assaulting enemy fortress with Artillery and infantry.

Insurgent collaborators horde on Ramiel. Just having some crazy fun.

Russian infantry on Beirut. Ambushing enemy APC, heavy engagements in the city, helicopter insertion at building rooftop for last assault.

US Army infantry on Qwai River. Using the Heavy Anti Tank and Automatic Rifleman kits. Defending against chinese APCs and infantry, getting CAS from Littlebird and hits by artillery.

US Army infantry on a TG scrim on Silent Eagle. Working with multiple squads, CQB, calling artillery, assaulting enemy positions, transported by land and air and humvee convoys.

Militia Infantry on Fools Road ambushing british squad.

Militia Infantry on Fools Road, with truck convoys, RPGs and some sniping.

British Infantry on Lashkar Valley. Ambushing Taliban vehicle, hunting for caches, insertion by helicopter and cave clearing.

IDF Infantry on Gaza Beach. Calling artillery, heavy CQB fight against Hamas.

US Army Infantry on Silent Eagle. Transported by chinooks, fighting in the central village, abandoned airfield and forrests.
