Landing a transport chopper
Hi guys. I'm new to PR. Only got introduced to it by my flatmate when we were discussing bunny hopping in CoD4 and he mentioned there was a BF2 mod that got rid of this ha. I'm kind of hooked now
I was never really any good at flying in BF2 but decided to give it a go in PR as it seems like a fun roll. I got a hold of the training mod and have been practising my flying skills with some of the transport choppers. I can now take off easy and fly pretty well although I've not had much air time in real games with enemy fire. One thing I can't master is the art of landing. Even when I know a flat piece of land with no obstructions I can't land a Helo on it without sustaining damage or flipping 9 times out of 10 and the one time I can land it I usually have to hover for 20 or so seconds before it hits the ground(Not very useful if I start to come under fire) Can you guys offer any tips? At what altitude should I start coming down at and what kind of speed and also what distance should I start my decent. Basicly everything that you could tell me would be helpful :P (I use the mouse+keyboard to fly btw) |

Dont touch S below 25-50m, make sure your level and you may want to flare to reduce speed. Float to the ground. Don't move the mouse while pressing S (s if ok above 40m, just so long as you have time to recover)

Re: Landing a transport chopper
A trick I have found useful is to pretty much land it like you might land a plane. Come in low and fast, pull up before you touch down to reduce speed, then put it down. A road is usually the best place for this, and Kashan on local is a great testing map. On the US side, keep practicing hugging the terrain until you can fly from main to North Village without ever really going high up. The roads around there are also prime landing spots. Another option is to come in high, dive down, then pull up before you land, but that's a bit trickier. Whatever you do, don't just fly in at a high altitude, then try dropping vertically.

Re: Landing a transport chopper
Good tip is to land in a safe, flat, area. Dont risk you or your teammates' lives by trying to be cool and doing a drop in a combat area.

Re: Landing a transport chopper
I was going to say the same thing as DuneHunter.
Go fast and hug the ground. Once you are near your destination, bring the tip of the heli up and let go of W. This will reduce your speed, and if done just right, your back landing wheel will hit first (gently too), then front. If you end up too far up from the ground, you can use S. Dont keep it pressed down, though. You will speed up quickly and it can be hard to stop yourself. Tap S a bunch instead. Also, make sure you let go of W. If you keep W pressed down after you bring your nose up, your helicopter will go straight back up into the air. Backwards. Very bad. Make sure you are at MOST going 90kmh. A safe number is 40. Lots of practice. Water drops are great if possible. Lots of practice. It is important to get to know each kind of helicopter. Merlins handle a lot differently then Blackhawks. If you try to land a Blackhawk exactly the way you would a Merlin, you will die. They are much less responsive. |

Re: Landing a transport chopper
Dont even bother with the numbers. That's really only usefull for jets.
Choppers work as such: When landing (most flying for me) Use only the keyboard. It's less sensitive then the mouse. Make sure you're level when landing on level ground, and if need be, press the down arrow to point your nose in the air. The BH lands as such IRL (tail wheel first) But yeah.. Flaring is pwnsome. |

Re: Landing a transport chopper
I do find tweaking the numbers has an effect. Really mostly it matters for the Huey since its such a touchy flight model. However if you want to try landing but with perhaps a bit more success the Huey is a good one since those landing struts make landings seem really rough compared to a BH. You can really beat the crap out of the bottom end of a Huey.
Also have you actually flown in a live server? Many people experience severe lag peculiar to online play that doesn't occur in offline local server training. |

Re: Landing a transport chopper
PFunk brings up a good point. There are a few servers out there that run the training mod 24/7. The only server that gives away the password for free is allfairgames(dot)com. They have the password on the main page of their website. The server is particularly laggy sometimes, but it is good enough.
